Making Therapy Harder: When Corporate Forces Interfere with Therapy
Our profession must take a firm stand against interference with therapy wherever possible. Therapy-interfering behavior, which amounts to practicing without a license in many cases can exist for reasons having to do with improper motivations to frame therapy for the benefit of others and not the client, thereby harming the latter.

ICE and ORR Policies Violate Psychotherapy

A Commentary on Governor Pritzker’s Budget
Governor Pritzker of Illinois presented his first budget address since taking office, and we appreciate his focus on increased mental health spending, and are hopeful that the budget is a harbinger of a positive trend. However, Illinois does not only need increased mental health and substance abuse funding but increased access to individualized mental health care of depth, dedication, duration and relationship.
Chicago Police Department Consent Decree
In August 2018, PsiAN wrote in support of the letter crafted by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other profit organizations, and highlighted the needs to support police officers and others, such as 911 operators, who may be impacted by trauma, and to increase resources dedicated to mental health treatment, including supervision for those counseling first responders.
Kaiser Mental Health Workers on Strike
Mental health workers at Kaiser Permanente have gone on strike, because they, as trained and licensed mental health professionals, “want more authority to apply their professional judgment to how often they see their patients and whether individual or group therapy is indicated.” See PsiAN’s letter in support of high-quality mental health care.
Child and Family Detention and Separation
With the ongoing and increasingly lengthy detentions of families, parents, and children coming into the U.S., PsiAN has signed onto a letter sent to the President outlining the psychological and emotional effects of such potentially damaging treatment. To help disseminate, please download both letters and send to congress.
