Changing the Public Narrative About Therapy

PsiAN aims to educate the public regarding the benefits of therapies of depth, insight and relationship, and to empower people to become advocates for these treatments.

Many people have questions about different forms of therapy. They may be familiar with the stereotypes, but not really know which type of therapy would be best for them. Most likely, what they’ve learned comes from their exposure to the advertising messages from powerful industries such as Big Pharma and Big Insurance. All too often, these messages steer people towards short-term, quick-fix solutions for symptom relief.

PsiAN wants people to know that there are highly effective therapies of depth, insight and relationship that can both address symptoms and help fix the underlying problems that cause those symptoms. We want to cut through the clutter and empower people with information about therapies that work, so that they can choose what’s right for them.

PsiAN’s original research on therapy and the public

  • We undertook an ambitious research effort to understand what the US public knows about therapy, how they think and feel about it, and what they most want out of it. Using state-of-the-art consumer insights tools, we have completed in-depth qualitative interviews and a large quantitative survey.

  • Our research has been published in a special edition of the journal Psychoanalytic Inquiry. Here is the abstract of our paper.

  • Click here to download the published paper, "Going Beneath the Surface: What People Want from Therapy," with our full results, methodology, and recommendations.

  • Here is our Executive Summary, including recommendations.

Correcting the Record

  • When a journalist or author gets it right, we sing their praises. When they leave out important information – like not mentioning therapies of depth, insight and relationship as a proven treatment option – we let them know!

“PsiAN is essential because it advocates for an evidence-based, holistic understanding of psychotherapy—particularly in the wake of distortions and misinformation about mental health treatment propagated by managed care organizations that prioritize profits over patients.  I am a proud to be a PsiAN member because the organization’s mission and values are key to promoting access to meaningful mental health care.”
